Identify Coins Online
Describe a coin however you actually know it — country, denomination, year, a mint mark, a catalogue number, even just a rough description — and CoinBids works out what it most likely is, without guessing past the point the evidence actually supports.
What "identify a coin" means on CoinBids
Coin descriptions are messy in real life: spelling varies, currency names get transliterated differently across languages, and the same coin might be called "5 drachmai", "5 drachmi", or written in Greek script depending on where you found it. CoinBids normalizes all of that first, so "5 drahcma 1976" and "5 δραχμές 1976" resolve to the same coin.
It then checks that combination against actual monetary history. A currency is only accepted for a year it was genuinely in circulation — so, for example, a coin described with a currency that had already been replaced by the stated year is flagged rather than silently accepted. Where a description is genuinely ambiguous (a currency name shared by more than one historical monetary system, for instance), CoinBids says so explicitly instead of picking one arbitrarily.
What you get back
Resolved identity
Country, currency, denomination and year, normalized and validated against known monetary history.
Issuer / ruler
Where a coin's issuer or ruling monarch can be identified and is consistent with the stated year, it's shown — never credited for a coin struck outside their actual reign.
Mint & mintmark
Mintmarks are only interpreted once the country context is known — the same letter can mean a different mint in a different country, so it's never guessed blind.
Catalogue & physical data
Where a confident match is found in the Numista catalogue, composition, weight and diameter are shown alongside catalogue numbers (KM#, and others where available).
Why identity is checked before pricing
Getting the identity wrong — the wrong year, wrong denomination, a replica mistaken for a genuine coin — makes any price research that follows meaningless. That's why identification is a distinct first step in CoinBids, feeding into Coin Value and Auction Intelligence rather than being skipped.
